I Pity The (April) Fool

Duolingo is the brand to watch when it comes to genius April Fool’s Day marketing tactics, like their 2025 Duolingo World Cruise. Innovative, fun, on brand and memorable.

April Fool's Day Gone Wrong

Even the biggest brands in the world swing and miss.

Google. 2016. The Mic Drop.

Gmail added a "Mic Drop" send button, click it and your email goes out with a Minion GIF dropping a mic. Cute, right? The problem was that it sat right next to the regular send button. People hit it by accident. Job applications. Client emails. Condolence notes. Gone, with a dancing Minion attached and the thread permanently muted on their end.

Deadlines were missed. Opportunities evaporated. And Google pulled the feature in under 24 hours, issuing a public apology and admitting they had pranked themselves.

The lesson: Own your mistakes and poke fun of yourselves in the process.

Lipton. 2025. Rest in Peach.

Lipton announced it was discontinuing its most popular flavor, Peach Iced Tea, with the tagline Rest in Peach on Instagram.

The internet was not happy.

Less than 24 hours later they said it was all a prank. It did reveal something valuable, people really love that tea. Engagement spiked. The brand leaned in and eventually got Ice-T to front a 2026 Peach Iced Tea campaign.

The lesson: Know your audience. When your prank accidentally becomes market research, use it.

Clever is great. On-brand is better. But if you're going all-in on an April Fools play, have a plan B ready before you hit send, because sometimes the prank pranks you.

🚨 Shameless plug alert 🚨

Speaking of things going sideways, when was the last time you thought about what happens before a crisis hits? Not if. When.
