Sell the Future, Not the Feature

Rewrite one page around the “better future”

Here’s a question from this week’s podcast guest, leadership coach Ken Golde: why does anyone buy a new couch?

Not because they need a couch. Because they want their family and guests to be more comfortable. Same with a washing machine. Nobody wants a washing machine. They want their time and money back.

Ken’s take is that every purchase is someone buying a vision of a better future. Your job is to help them see it.

Most marketing copy doesn’t do that. It lists features, specs and integrations, then hopes the buyer connects the dots. Here’s how to fix one page this week:

1. 🎯 Pick your highest-traffic page with a weak conversion rate.
Your homepage, a service page, or maybe your top landing page.

2. 📝 Highlight every feature claim.
Anything describing what your product is or does: “AI-powered reporting,” “24/7 support,” “50+ integrations.”

3. 🔮 Ask “so they can what?” for each one.
Push each feature forward into the buyer’s future:

  • “Automated reporting” → “Walk into Monday’s meeting with the numbers already done.”

  • “24/7 support” → “Stop losing weekends to client issues.”

  • “50+ integrations” → “Keep the tools your team already likes.”

4. 🎧 Steal the words from your sales calls.
Pull 3-5 recent call recordings or notes and listen for how buyers describe the life they want. In Ken’s insurance example, customers who rambled about their families weren’t off-topic. They were literally listing who they wanted to protect. That’s your headline.

5. 🧪 Rewrite the hero section and test it.
Swap your headline and subhead for the future-focused version. Run it for 2-4 weeks against the original and compare conversions.

Ken Golde, leadership coach, keynote speaker and former Hollywood film director, discusses why shifting your mindset changes how you sell, lead and show up under pressure. Ken explains why the real battle is how you choose to think instead of what happens to you, and shows why the best closers are calm, aware and able to turn rejection, pressure and bad moods into momentum.
