Repurpose content, increase traffic

Backlinko found that refreshing old content, not publishing new content, drove a 70% jump in organic traffic. No new posts. Just editing what was already written.

We’re talking about content decay. Your rankings slip, your traffic drops and your engagement fades, usually without you noticing. Old stats and broken links are usually the culprit. Google likes it fresh.

Try this:

  • 📉 Pull your decay list. In Google Search Console, sort by clicks over the last 12 months and flag any page down 20% or more.

  • ✂️ Pick a pile for each post. Refresh it if the topic's still right but the content's thin. Consolidate it if two or three other posts are already covering the same ground. Cut it if it's not earning its keep.

  • 🔍 Check AI visibility. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a question your post should answer. If you're not cited, your formatting probably isn't answer-first enough for AI Overviews to grab.

  • ✍️ Refresh the top 20%. Update stats, add current examples, tighten the intro to answer the question in the first two sentences. Republish with a new dateModified.

  • 🔗 Redirect the rest. For your cut and consolidate piles, 301 redirect old URLs into your strongest page.

  • 📅 Calendar the next audit. 90 days out. Repeat.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Before you refresh anything, you need to know what's actually broken. Screaming Frog is the crawler pros have relied on for years (we use it here at Vendilli), and there’s a free version if you want to test it out.

  • Crawls up to 500 URLs free, no signup or email required

  • Flags 300+ SEO issues: broken links, duplicate or missing titles and meta descriptions, thin content, redirect chains and more

  • Exports everything to a spreadsheet, so you can sort by word count, status code or last crawled

Need more than 500 URLs? Get a license to remove the cap, plus unlocks JavaScript rendering, scheduling and API integrations with GSC, GA and PageSpeed Insights.
