Lights, Camera, Algorithm

We’ve been adding more video content into our brand this year and are watching the impact daily. If video keeps slipping down on your list, we get it. Lighting, camera angles, TIME IN GENERAL. Here’s a few things we’ve learned in the last few months and wanted to share.

The video doesn’t have to be perfect. We have an in-house studio for our podcasts, but when we need to film a quick YouTube video, we aren’t bothering our video crew to come set it all up. We grab our Osmo (could use your phone, too), put it on the tripod, put our lights on and we film. Tip: Think about where you are distributing your video so you know if you’re shooting vertically or horizontally.

You don’t have to be perfect. Think you’re not cut out for on-camera work? You are. Videos are a great way to connect with your current clients, potential clients and your colleagues to showcase your brand, your team and highlight your expertise. Tip: Scripts feel robotic. Outline what you want to say, but say it like you’re having a conversation, not giving a speech.

And because we love an acronym: BE RAD

Batch it. Make a three minute video, then cut it all up and use it where you need it. A 30 second clip for YouTube Shorts, the whole version on LinkedIn, etc.

Edit in the fun stuff. There’s a reason movies keep their bloopers. The flubbed word or the trip over the camera cord can stay in. Humor always wins.

Repurpose. Go through your blogs, your past LinkedIn posts. You already have content. Just record it.

Add captions. People are watching, but also scrolling. Put captions on all of your videos so even with no sound, you’re still getting the point across.

Decode. What does the data show? What are people watching, saving, commenting on? The more you know what your audience wants, the better your next round of content.

If you don’t have a YouTube channel, go create one and post a short 30-second video. Now, repeat.
