Your Subject Line Doesn’t Matter If No One Sees It

Gmail, Yahoo, Microsoft, they’ve all gotten stricter when it comes to sending emails. 2026's bulk sender rules apply if you are sending 5K emails or more a day. If you aren’t compliant, you might not even hit the spam box.

Here's how to check your reputation and fix it before your next campaign.

  1. Authenticate everything. SPF, DKIM and DMARC aren't optional anymore. If you haven't set up all three, mailbox providers treat you as suspicious by default. Most ESPs (Klaviyo, HubSpot, Mailchimp) walk you through this in under 20 minutes.

  2. Remove (or re-engage) anyone who hasn't opened in 90 days. A stale list is a bad list and it affects your sender score. Yes, that’s a real score from 0-100 that affects whether your message lands in spam.

  3. Keep your bounce rate under 2%. This is the industry standard so if you find yourself on a higher scale, clean up your list and try implementing double opt-in.

  4. Watch your spam complaint rate, target under 0.1%. One complaint per 1,000 emails is what you get. Make it easy for users to unsubscribe, send relevant content and do it on a schedule that feels reasonable.

  5. Warm up any new sending domain. A new domain and a new list sending thousands of emails on the first day don’t match. Ramp up the volume over a few weeks time to lessen spam issues.
